Synopsis: Cabaret singer Velma Kelly (Catherine Zeta-Jones) is in prison for killing her philandering husband. Wanna-be cabaret singer Roxie Hart (Renee Zellwegger) is in prison for killing the lover who jilted her. Now they are battling for fame at any cost in the fickle city of Chicago.

Review: This is probably the best movie adaptation of a musical that was ever made. It isn’t just a great musical, it is a great movie, even if one doesn’t like musicals. (But as far as musicals goes, this is one of the sexiest.) The costumes, the choreography, the set design were all perfect. They captured the excitement and flare of a live performance while taking advantage of filming and editing.

Newbie director Rob Marshall was a good choice. Richard Gere, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Renee Zellwegger all gave surprising strong performances. I knew they could act, but sing too? Apparently so. The great supporting cast included Queen Latifah, Taye Diggs, and John C. Reilly.

I imagine this movie will not be quite as good on video, so go quickly run and go see it in theaters while you still can. Definitely see this movie.
